This document sets out the policy of the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) with regard to the privacy of users of this website. As a general rule, the OIC does not collect personal information about visitors to the site. However, any personal information which you volunteer to the OIC will be treated with the highest standards of security and confidentiality, strictly in accordance with the Data Protection Acts, 1988 & 2003.

For general web browsing, no personal information is revealed to us, although certain statistical information is available to the OIC via our Internet service provider. This information may include the name of the Internet domain from which you access the Internet; the type of browser and operating system you are using; the date and time you accessed the site; the previous Internet address from which you linked directly to this site, any search terms you used to access the site, the pages that you visited, and any files you download.

Some of the above information is used to create summary statistics, which allow us to assess the number of visitors to our site; identify what pages are visited most frequently and, ultimately, make the site more user friendly.

Certain pages on this site provide an option to request further information by email. This information will only be recorded if you choose to send us a message and will only be used for the purpose for which you have provided it.

The website of the Office of the Information Commissioner does not currently use cookies, and does not require cookies to be enabled for navigation. (A cookie is a piece of information that an Internet web site may send to your browser when you access information at that site.)
